I'm delighted to introduce the latest treatment at Aspire Aesthetics in Belfast, Aqualyx – a non-surgical treatment to reduce stubborn pockets of fat. An effective, less invasive alternative to liposuction, Aqualyx is designed to sculpt the face and body, helping shape areas of unwanted fat that may be resistant to diet and exercise.

This injectable procedure is suitable for dissolving localised, moderate areas of fat such as jowls, double chin, saddle bags or bra rolls.

HOW DOES AQUALYX WORK?

Aqualyx is a gel-based aqueous solution, which is injected into areas of unwanted fat, causing them to dissolve and leave the body. Over a course of treatments, a slow-release solution is injected into the layer of fat tissue beneath the skin, to liquefy and destroy fat cells. Lipids are then released and naturally eliminated through the lymphatic system.

Invented by Professor Pasquale Motolese, Aqualyx was  originally developed for the non-surgical reduction of localised fat under the skin and has been in use since 2009.

AQUALYXTM contains desoxycholan-acid, a secondary bile acid which our body can produce to aid fat digestion. The fat-dissolving effect of this acid was used by Aqualyx inventor, to develop a synthetically manufactured variant. The active substance locks on to fat cell walls, making them become unstable and releasing the fatty acid that is stored within.

WHERE ON MY FACE & BODY CAN AQUALYX BE USED?

This treatment can be performed in almost any area of excess fat, to shape the face and body. The most common areas are:

  • jowls
  • chin
  • hips
  • abdomen
  • buttocks
  • waistline
  • gynaecomastia (‘man boobs')
  • arms
  • armpits
  • folds on back
  • inner legs
  • knees

The treatment works best in small areas, and more than one session is usually required, depending on the desired result. There is usually a gap of 3 to 4 weeks between sessions.

WHAT ABOUT AFTERCARE?

Treatment lasts up to one hour, is virtually pain-free and involves the use of a local anesthetic. There is a possibility of temporary redness, bruising and swelling to the treated area for up to a few days after.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

The amount of treatments varies according to the desired outcome and size of fat depot and will be discussed at consultation. While some patients will see a difference in 1-2 treatments, on average around 3 to 5 appointments are required at 3-4 week intervals to see optimum results. A treatment with Aqualyx does not result in weight loss; healthy nutrition and exercise regimen are necessary to ensure successful treatment.

WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?

Aqualyx is suitable for patients who do not want the more invasive liposuction or laser lipo treatments, who do not have large amounts of fat to remove and who are over 18 years and under 60 years of age. The treatment is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women or those with a pathological condition.

Only available through trained healthcare professionals in the UK. Aspire Aesthetics is one of the few clinics in Northern Ireland to offer Aqualyx following my hands-on training with the UK's leading expert, Consultant Surgeon and Cosmetic Doctor Dr Arturo Almeida.
