Cosmetic injectables are a medical treatment and as such, there is always a possibility of bruising and swelling post-treatment, particularly with dermal fillers. Some people are more prone to this than others – and even the most experienced injector can not always avoid puncturing a tiny blood vessel below your skin. It can take up to 2-4 weeks for the effects to settle completely, revealing your final (hopefully fabulous!) results.

I've put together some guidelines for both before and after treatment to help reduce the possibility of swelling and bruising after injectables; specifically dermal fillers.

BEFORE TREATMENT

DO

  • Use arnica several days in advance
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Come to your appointment makeup free (if possible)

DON'T

  • Drink alcohol 24 hours before
  • Take blood thinning painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen
  • Book dental treatments for 2 weeks before (or after)

DERMAL FILLER AFTERCARE

DO

KEEP IT CLEAN – There are miniscule open wounds on your skin at the needle entry points. Keep them clean. Avoid touching, makeup, skincare products for at least a few hours (ideally 12-24 if you can).

ELEVATE – Try to stay upright for several hours minimum after treatment and sleep propped on an extra pillow if you can. Not the end of the world if not so please don't stress about this.

ICE ICE BABY – On the day of treatment, use an ice pack regularly to reduce the possibility of swelling. Regular short bursts works best to avoid freezing the fillers.

ARNICA – Apply arnica gel several times a day to help prevent bruising. You can also take tablets though these work best when taken for a number of days pre-treatment. An antihistamine can also help decrease swelling.

DON'T

MEDICATION – Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen and aspirin are not recommended after dermal fillers as these can thin the blood and can increase the risk of bruising & swelling.

CHILL – Avoid strenuous exercise until 24 hours post-treatment to reduce likelihood of filler migrating.

TEETOTAL – It's best not to drink alcohol or caffeine on the day of treatment as both can cause your blood to thin & increase chance of bruising.

MASSAGE – Avoid massaging any lumps in your filler in case it becomes misplaced. Filler remains pliable for up to two weeks and should settle naturally. If it doesn't, I will massage any remaining lumps at your review.

KEEP YOUR COOL – Avoid intense heat, saunas and sunbathing for 24 hours after treatment.
